RAMSBERG’S THUMB

There was something peculiar
about Ramsberg’s one thumb.
I think a circular saw had taken
half of it.

He had built our stove
in ’39 and it still works.

The remaining joint
had something childishly round
and defenceless about it.

Nature and unnature
at one and the same time.
Or nature’s remarkable ability
to behave unnaturally.

Even today
I often think
of Ramsberg’s thumb

THE GIRL

One day life stands
gently smiling like a girl
suddenly on the far side of the stream
and asks
(in her vexatious style)

But how did you end up there?
